2003 Fourth Annual New Year Ski Trip
Thank you all for making the trip so much fun!
Last Updated 1/30/03: payments updated
The photos are here! These are Shurik's, Lenya's, Sasha's, and mine, fully edited and cleaned up.
All the financial details have been settled - thanks!
You can check out the detailed billing information as well as everyone's email addresses (on the 2nd worksheet). Briefly,
- Lodging was $34.48 per person per night, exactly in the middle of the predicted $30-40 range.
- Food was $5.30 per person per day, counting New Year's eve as an extra half day.
- Alcohol was $4.96 per person per night, after subtracting the cost of the unopened bottles people took home.
We are continuing our great tradition of New Year ski trips. It seems that the number of people doubles each year -- the more, the merrier! Check out last year's ski trip and its photos.
This page describes only the organizational details of the trip; if you want motivation and/or excitement, talk to me directly :)
We are going to live in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains region, with several great mountains within easy reach. Check out Ski NH for a quick mountain comparison. For those who went last year, remember that Sunday River was 14 miles from our house.
- Attitash Bear Peak - 1 mile, American Skiing Company. $49 midweek, $53 weekend, from $42/day for multiday tickets.
- Black - 9 miles. $32 on weekends and holidays, $20 weekday, $25 students.
- Cranmore - 12 miles. $35/day
- Wildcat - 20 miles, great for advanced skiers. $52 ($42 for students) for one day, or $36 per day for 2 days.
- Bretton Woods -- 20 miles, best cross country skiing in New England. $49 midweek, $57 weekend, $44-51/day for multiday tickets, $19 for night skiing.
We have reservations for 6 nights, from Monday, December 30th, to Sunday, January 5rd. The reason for picking these dates (as opposed to the previous weekend) is that it is not considered to be holiday time and is therefore much cheaper (by about 50%!) as well as much less crowded and easier to find accomodations.
We have reserved a penthouse (2 bedrooms + loft, which will be the common hang-out place) and three 2-bedroom townhouses at the Seasons at Attitash. The penthouse and 2-bd #1 are in one building, and 2 bd's #2 & #3 are in another one, within walking distance of each other; there is also a central club house. We stayed there on our first ever new year ski trip, and loved it.
Just the facts:
- 3 hour drive from Boston
- Townhouses have 1.5 to 2.5 bedrooms and 1.5 to 2 bathrooms, kitchen and living room with dining area and TV
- Club house has an indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, table tennis, pool, gym, and video arcade. It's open 9am-10pm.

Arrangements Changed
Stasya & I will take care of dinner for the night of the 30th, as well as some apres ski for the 31st. Masha will organize a festive dinner for the 31st. We will also buy breakfast, snack foods, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for everyone.
For later days (1st through the 5th), you can either go out or somehow organize dinners in your house. The North Conway area is well populated, and there are plenty of restaurants and supermarkets. The bottom line: don't worry about it!
- Deposit: $150 or $25/person/day which will go towards our lodging costs
- Lodging: lodging will be around $30-40 per person per night
- Lift Tickets: $20-$50 per person per day, depending on which mountain you choose
- Ski Rental: $20 first day + $10/day, if you rent in Ski Market
- Food: each townhouse will take care of its own food
- Alcohol: around $25/person
Please bring the following, if you can:
- Guitars
- Music, CDs or MP3s (both dance music and other types)
- Movies, both on VHS and DVD/Video CD (including, but not limited to, Russian movies)
- New year decorations ("dozhdik", lights)
- Remember to bring bathing suits for the pool/jacuzzi!
- Ping pong pedals
- Ice skates
Linens, blankets, pillows, and towels should be available for everyone. The kitchens are also fully equipped.
We will be doing a gift exchange "secret Santa" style (like last year),
i.e. everyone gets assigned randomly a person for whom to buy a gift,
with identity of givers kept secret from corresponding recipients of
gifts. While I do understand that getting a gift for someone you've
never met before this trip can be problematic, it can also be fun if
approached with the right attitude. This also seems to be the easiest
and most fair scenario, but I welcome alternative suggestions. One idea
is to allow subsequent swapping of gifts, but in such a way that those
who get a personal gift that they like will be able to keep it (at some
price :-))
Mobil issues certificates for $10 off the lift ticket price at Attitash Bear Peak, as well as other discounts. If you have a car, please use Mobil in order to get these certificates.
Here's a preliminary transportation plan for getting there (please email Stasya if you see problems with this). Passengers, please get in touch with your drivers.
